AMWU backing labor's renewable training Package

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) welcomes today's announcement by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) that if elected, it will invest $75 million in TAFEs and apprenticeships as part of a Renewable Training Package.

"After years of funding cuts and neglect under the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Liberal Government, we need a government that understands the importance of TAFE and apprenticeships," said AMWU National President Andrew Dettmer.

"We welcome this announcement that a future Labor Government will invest $75 million in TAFE and apprenticeships that will lead to secure, well paid jobs in an industry that is growing," he said.

"Australia has the capacity to be a world leader in the manufacturing of renewable technologies, but that requires government investment. If we do not embrace these industries of the future now, we risk being left behind."

"Ten thousand renewable-energy apprenticeships, accompanied by a $2,000 grant for each apprentice to help them cover the costs of their education is a great investment in our young people and our country's future."

"There are 150,000 fewer apprentices today than when the Abbott Government took power in 2013. That is a disgrace which must be addressed."

"TAFE and apprenticeships are vital to a skilled economy, and we welcome the ALP's acknowledgement of their importance."

"TAFE is one of the most trusted and respected training organisations in our country. Time and again we have seen that TAFE is a leader in delivering relevant, industry-standard education and skills. We welcome the announcement that the ALP will invest in renewable industry upgrades to TAFE to ensure that our apprentices have the opportunity to train on the best equipment in the best facilities," Mr Dettmer said.

"We look forward to working with a future Labor Government to ensure that this investment delivers the high paying, secure, skilled jobs that Australia needs in the 21stcentury."
