AMWU backs Labor's SA manufacturing initiative

The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU) has welcomed Labor's commitment to promote manufacturing jobs in South Australia.

Labor's plan to boost industry and research collaboration by establishing an advanced manufacturing research facility could kick start a new era in Australian manufacturing.

AMWU Assistant SA Secretary Peter Bauer said South Australian workers had been badly let down by the Coalition which failed to support the auto industry, leading to the end of vehicle manufacturing in Australia.

"We can't afford to lose any more jobs in this state and Labor's plan to re-invigorate manufacturing and boost jobs is good news for manufacturing workers," Mr Bauer said.

"The Coalition has no plans for manufacturing and has deserted manufacturing employers and workers in SA," he said.

"Our highest priority in a wealthy nation like Australia should be to deliver good, well paying jobs to support workers and their families and Labor's plan has the capacity to deliver thousands of new manufacturing jobs.

"To take advantage of the future opportunities in manufacturing we must boost TAFE and give more young people the opportunity to take up apprenticeships and become the highly skilled workers of tomorrow."

Mr Bauer said the AMWU had long campaigned for increased funding for TAFE and a boost in apprenticeship opportunities.

"Our members in rail manufacturing are welcoming the National Rail Manufacturing Plan and are hopeful restructuring the industry will lead to greater confidence for companies and workers."

"The Coalition has ignored the growth potential of manufacturing and Labor's policies

will lift manufacturing and boost jobs."

"South Australia is poised to be a leader in innovation with the state leading the way with manufacturing in sectors embracing new technology including battery manufacturing, steel making and shipbuilding."

"The recent announcement of Labor's investment in R&D and skill development is vital for the state to succeed in the future," Mr Bauer said.
