Andrews' COVID fines fall flat

Liberal Party Victoria

Confirmation

today that fewer than 1 in 10 fines issued for breaches of the Chief Health Officer's directions have been paid is the latest failure of Daniel Andrews' inconsistent COVID-19 enforcement.

Figures confirm that only 3,289 of 38,948 COVID infringements were fully paid as of June 14 with more than 4,800 withdrawn or cancelled.

Furthermore, reports indicate that enforcement action on unpaid fines, including property seizures as 65 per cent of issued fines have reached a "notice of final demand" stage.

With more fines having been repealed than paid – it is clear Daniel Andrews' heavy-handed enforcement approach has left both the community and police themselves confused.

Daniel Andrews has no plan to support Victorians through his repeated lockdowns, only a heavy-handed plan to crack down on Victorians who overwhelmingly are just trying to do the right thing.

As stated by Shadow Minister for Police & Crime Prevention, David Southwick:

"After more than a year of the Andrews Government's heavy-handed approach and confusing rules, it is little wonder why so few fines have been paid.

"When fines are issued for mother and daughter driving lessons, or to small businesses hours after lockdowns come into force – it's clear Daniel Andrews' enforcement priorities are all wrong.

"Daniel Andrews has no plan to support Victorians through his repeated lockdowns, only a plan for more fines and tougher enforcement of his inconsistent rules."
