Animal cruelty, St George

A man allegedly involved in a video posted to Snapchat of a possum being injured has been charged with animal cruelty.

Police and the RSPCA began an investigation after a person provided a copy of the video to officers.

It is alleged the man squeezed the back of a possum's neck causing it to scream in pain.

It is further alleged he put the possum onto a concrete barricade in the middle of the street and pushed down heavily around its throat, again causing it to scream out in pain.

He then allegedly threw the possum into the middle of the road.

Following extensive enquiries – including the review of CCTV footage – it was determined the incident occurred on February 3 at the intersection of Grey Street and St Georges Terrace.

A 21-year-old Daymar man was arrested yesterday afternoon and was charged with one count of serious animal cruelty.

He was bailed to appear in the St George Magistrates Court on March 12.

Police would like to thank the community for their assistance in bringing matters of serious animal cruelty to the attention of officers and the RSPCA.
