Another step to improving communications in remote communities

The NT Government is delivering another win for remote Territorians who deserve high-quality internet, with NBN services to be rolled out in Kilgariff, Alice Springs.

Construction will provide optic fibre connections from The Gap to Alice Springs Airport, including Kilgariff. NBN, via Fibre to the Premises upgrades, will occur to all homes in the area and provide connections to future stages of Kilgariff Estate.

The NT Government has been working hard with NBN Co. to find a suitable outcome to deliver this service to Alice Springs newest suburb, with works expected to commence early next year. This infrastructure will support an expansion of the national broadband network south of the Gap, including to the airport.

The NT Government has been advocating for improved telecommunications services in remote communities which is a critical foundation for digital inclusion, enabling residents to achieve and engage with online education, health and financial services, along with many other services.

Under previous partnerships with Telstra stretching back to 2009, 37 remote Territory communities have received mobile phone and/or broadband services with eight more communities to be connected by 2019 under the existing program.

As stated by Member for Namatjira, Chansey Paech:

Every Territorian, no matter where they live, deserves to have access to high quality phone and internet services. It is vital that we use all available infrastructure to get more remote Territorians connected and help support economic development, health and education outcomes.

Delivering NBN services to Kilgariff is an issue Ive been campaigning about for some time and Im proud to help delivering high quality internet to the areas residents.

As stated by Minister for Corporate and Information Services, Lauren Moss:

It is vital we get our communities connected and work to bridge the digital divide in the bush, providing remote Territorians with the digital opportunities other Australians take for granted.

For NT children to receive comparable education and achieve the digital literacy levels needed for future jobs, access to the internet is essential.

Digital skills are a core requirement for many jobs and are becoming essential in the modern world, from internet banking and shopping to education, socialising business. To gain digital skills people must first have digital access. Telecommunications infrastructure is the foundation.

the Land Development Corporation CEO, Tony Stubbin:

We have been advocating for the residents of Kilgariff to have access to NBN services. The need for faster communications in the area was a must and we are happy to see this delivered to the residents.
