Police are appealing for information from the public after a family dog was shot at Deniliquin at the weekend.
The owners of a four-year-old Labrador became concerned after they found a wound on the dog's left side about 7pm Sunday (3 January 2021).
They took the dog to the vet, who removed an air rifle pellet during emergency surgery.
The dog, Willow, is currently stable but has suffered internal injuries as a consequence of the shooting.
Officers attached to Murray River Police District were alerted and have initiated inquiries.
The vet has advised police Willow was probably shot earlier that day and police are now appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact Deniliquin Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
