Applications open for next generation of leaders 22 December

Youth Council Member discussion

Council is excited to announce that applications for the 2023 Snowy Monaro Youth Council are now open, giving our next generation of leaders the opportunity to make a real difference to their community.

Open to any young person between 12 and 24 years who lives in the Snowy Monaro region, applications close 5pm Friday 4 February 2023.

The Youth Council plays a vital role in our local government, advocating for the needs of young people direct to Council and Councillors. This is an incredible opportunity for ambitious and motivated young people in our community to have a real impact on Council's decisions, and share the perspective of the younger generations that are too often excluded from political processes.

Youth Councillor Responsibilities include:

  • Advocating, providing advice and making recommendations to Council on matters affecting young people
  • Coordinating, planning and implementing community activities and events, including National Youth Week
  • Identifying and initiating opportunities for the participation and involvement of young people in community activities
  • Promoting community awareness of issues that affect young people

The Youth Council meets in Cooma once a month at 5pm. Youth Councillors are expected to attend the majority of meetings in person or online. Councillors also have the opportunity to be part of working groups for Youth Council projects and should have regular access to a phone/email to communicate with the team.

The first meeting for the 2023 Youth Council will be held in March 2023.

Youth Councillors receive ongoing mentoring and support from Council employees and elected Councillors. They also have the opportunity to participate in leadership training and conferences throughout the year.

If this sounds like you or someone you know, head to: www.snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au/Community/Young-People/Snowy-Monaro-Regional-Youth-Council to complete the application today.

Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to complete the consent form.
