Appointment of National Data Commissioner Designate

The Morrison Government has today announced the appointment of Ms Gayle Milnes as the new National Data Commissioner Designate. The Governor-General will be asked to consider this appointment as a statutory office holder when the Data Availability and Transparency (DAT) Bill passes.

Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills and Family Business, Stuart Robert, said Ms Milnes' appointment comes at a key time for the Office of the National Data Commissioner in the implementation of the data sharing scheme.

'Ms Milnes is an experienced public service leader with an excellent record of driving nationally-significant outcomes in senior Australian Government statutory, data and regulatory roles,' Minister Robert said.

'I also thank the Interim National Data Commissioner, Ms Deb Anton. Ms Anton has excelled in leading the development of the Data Availability and Transparency Bill over the last three and a half years. I would like to acknowledge her contribution to this reform agenda while establishing the Office of the National Data Commissioner and wish her well in her new role.'

Ms Milnes is currently the First Assistant Secretary of the Data, Analytics and Policy Division at the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications. She has also held other senior leadership positions across the Australian Public Service-as Chief Executive Officer of the Climate Change Authority, with the Department of Environment, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Ms Milnes' appointment as National Data Commissioner Designate will commence from 8 December 2021. If appointed to the statutory office she would be appointed for a period of five years.
