Arson arrest at Sippy Downs, QLD

Sunshine Coast police have arrested a 13-year-old boy following investigations into a fire in bushland at Sippy Downs on February 2, Queensland Police say.

The fire affected residences on Statesman Circuit, causing an Emergency Situation to be declared and the evacuation of 16 dwellings consisting of 23 occupants due to the intensity of the fire, smoke and possible structural damage.

Detective Acting Inspector Daren Edwards said it’s an important reminder of the dangers of playing with lighters or matches, especially in hot and dry conditions.

"With the hot temperatures we’re experiencing on the Sunshine Coast it’s important for everyone to realise fire is not a toy, it can endanger lives," Detective Acting Inspector Edwards said.

The boy will be dealt under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
