Arson investigation following fires at car wrecking yards on Brisbane’s northside

Two overnight blazes which occurred within 20 minutes of each other on Brisbane’s northside are being treated as suspicious, Queensland Police say.

The first fire broke out around 10.45pm at an auto wrecking yard on Beams Road, Fitzgibbon and the second shortly after 11pm again at a car wrecking yard this time located on Sandgate Road at Boondall.

Several houses located on either side of the Boondall business were evacuated with both blazes also causing a number of local road closures. These roads have since re-opened, and all residence have returned to their homes, which were not damaged.

A number of cars were destroyed in the fires – approximately seven at Fitzgibbon and in excess of 40 at Boondall.

Both businesses will be guarded by police overnight with fire investigators and scenes of crimes officers attending in daylight hours.

Both businesses were closed at the time of the fires and no one was physically injured.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area around the time the fires broke out and noticed anything or anyone suspicious to contact Crime Stoppers.

Anyone with information which could assist with this matter should contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
