Art Classes for Alzheimer's Sufferers

Faire and Co

The two new classes are designed to support carers and the people they care for.

Faire and Co, Kalamunda's process art studio, is furthering their support of the community with the addition of two new, inclusive classes: Care Bears and Care Bear Memories. The classes have been tailored to people that need care, and those that care for them.

People with different abilities can try out the Care Bears class, where they will undertake a colourful, creative craft project. The Care Bear Memories class is for those living with Alzheimer's or dementia. Participants will take a step back in time and create art influenced by the culture of different eras, like the 1920s.

To accommodate those who might not enjoy being in a larger group, each class has a limited number of participants. The activities are also more in line with process art: art which has an emphasis on the process of creating, not the end result. But, like all Faire and Co classes, it's mainly about the experience of joining in.

The inclusive classes present a fun, safe option for carers who are struggling to find appropriate, engaging activities for the person they care for. Coming into their sixth year of operation, Faire and Co director, Fay Valli, knew that these specialised classes were always on the horizon.

"We have always wanted to offer classes to those who may have lost that urge to create, lost confidence in their skills, or just want to try something new," she said. "These classes are for people in the community who want to create without any pressure. They have a focus on people who have carers — carers who want to take them for outings, but don't have any real place to go."

The new classes are reflective of Faire and Co's aim to raise or reinvigorate creative thinkers who explore their world, express their dreams, embrace differences, and never lose touch with their inner artist.

Kalamunda locals are encouraged to spread the word to anyone they think might be benefit from trying out a class. Those who are interested can contact Fay using the details below:
