Year-long pilot scheme to help healthcare leaders maximise use of technology

Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) is to deliver a year-long pilot scheme aimed at helping NHS leaders make the most of available technology to maximise opportunities and streamline healthcare systems.

The Health Innovation Placement is a new programme from Health Education England’s Digital Readiness Programme, aligned with the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme that ARU is already leading.

The programme aims to bring a new mindset to addressing change in the NHS, helping people embrace digital solutions and generate ideas to take back to day-to-day working. It also aims to create a network of digital leaders dedicated to driving change from within.

NHS clinical and non-clinical leaders and NHS staff who want to develop their leadership capability and experience will undertake the part-time programme from February, working with start-ups and SMEs to help solve problems and develop digital skills.

Participants will have access to learning and development opportunities including workshops, placement time with SMEs, mentoring and tailored leadership training.

Those who participate in the placement will acquire a better understanding of how digital can transform their organisation and the role they can play in that, as well as encouraging others to embrace digital solutions.

Professor Tony Young, Director of Medical Innovation at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for NHS leaders to take part in an innovative placement to arm them with the digital skills they need to drive real change within the health service.

“It’s in everyone’s interest to have an efficient NHS that uses digital opportunities to the maximum. This programme will assist that aim and I’m delighted that ARU will be working in partnership with Health Education England to provide the training.”

The application portal is open until 30 January, and the programme begins with a virtual launch event on 24 February, with an initial cohort of between 10 and 20 leaders from across the NHS.

Applicants will be asked to submit a 60-second filmed elevator pitch detailing the NHS problem they want to solve and why, to support their written application.
