Aussie Tech Ignites Indonesia's Digital Revolution

Austrade

Ten of Australia's most exciting tech companies and scaleups had a first-hand look at digital transformation opportunities in Indonesia during a Landing Pads immersion program.

The companies - with capabilities spanning AI, data, cyber security and data governance - travelled to Jakarta in October to meet leaders in Indonesia's tech ecosystem and attend the Tech in Asia Conference.

The calibre of the cohort - which included tech leaders Atlassian and Seek - highlighted Australia's position as a trusted digital transformation partner for Indonesia. Australia offers a compelling combination of innovation, reliability, and a deep commitment to secure, sustainable growth.

Exchanging ideas, forging partnerships

Over the three-day program, delegates had opportunities to:

  • identify commercial leads and establish valuable networks with Indonesia's vibrant tech ecosystem through curated business-matching and informal sharing sessions
  • exchange knowledge and explore innovative business approaches with industry partners
  • deepen their understanding of the Indonesian tech landscape, including navigating market-specific regulatory requirements and opportunities.

The companies also attended the Tech in Asia Conference, Southeast Asia's premier tech and startup event. Tech in Asia brought together founders, corporates, venture capital funds and government leaders to exchange ideas, forge partnerships and explore opportunities.

The cohort showcased their solutions on stage at Tech in Asia and behind closed doors to more than 55 executives from banks, regulators, insurance companies, and conglomerates. These included Sinarmas Group during a site visit to the Digital Hub at BSD City. The site visit provided delegates with insights into how BSD City is creating an innovation ecosystem, sparking discussions on opportunities for Australian tech to support a secure ecosystem.

'Participating in this program has opened my eyes to the market in Indonesia,' says Shaun Lordan, CEO of Sphere for Good. 'It's been second to none, having our [Team Australia] booth, seeing how much interest there is from the Indonesian companies in the Australian market, and the companies that are coming out of Indonesia.'

Strong relationships underpin success

Australia's expertise in advanced technologies support Indonesia's vision for a digital future. On this immersive mission, the cohort identified commercial leads across AI for operational efficiencies, and in data governance, cyber security, regtech, electronic know-your-customer (e-KYC) and digital identity.

Indonesia's commitment to innovation is reflected through policies such as the Personal Data Protection Law. The Indonesia Financial Services Authority also released a 2024-2028 Roadmap for the Development and Strengthening of Financial Sector Technology Innovation, Digital Financial Assets, and Crypto Assets (IAKD).

The insights into Indonesia's financial market regulations and how they operate is a key benefit of the Landing Pads program.

'Access to the financial regulator [OJK] provided clarity of sovereign AI and compliance, and the business-matching on day two of the program translated directly into pipeline,' says Kostas Siourthas, CEO of TomorrowX.

'Trusted relationships drive business outcomes in this region, and the delegates experienced first-hand that business follows trust and trust follows time,' says Lauren Adams, Trade Commissioner, Austrade Jakarta. 'Austrade's Landing Pad program is helps build that trust for Australian tech companies.'
