Rockhampton Regional Council is calling on residents to shine a light on the people who make a positive difference in their communities, with nominations now open for the 2027 Australia Day Awards.
The awards recognise individuals, groups and organisations whose dedication, achievements and commitment help strengthen the Rockhampton Region and enrich community life.
Nominations close on Sunday 13 December 2026 and will be considered across the following categories:
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year
- Community Service Award
- Arts and Culture Award
- Sportsperson of the Year
- Junior Sportsperson of the Year
- Sports Official of the Year
- Community Initiative/Event
Mayor Tony Williams said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate the many people whose efforts often happen quietly in the background.
"Every community has people who step up when something needs to be done and never ask for recognition," Mayor Williams said.
"They are the volunteers setting up before sunrise, the mentors guiding young people, the sporting champions representing our Region and the community members who are always willing to lend a hand.
"The Australia Day Awards give us the chance to pause and recognise those individuals and tell them that their contribution matters.
"Often the most deserving recipients are the people who would never consider nominating themselves, which is why we rely on our community to put their names forward."
2026 Citizen of the Year Shirley Mathers said receiving an Australia Day Award was a memorable experience and encouraged others to recognise those making a difference.
"I was genuinely honoured to be recognised alongside so many people who are committed to giving back to our community," Mathers said.
"There are countless individuals across the Region whose contributions deserve to be celebrated, and a nomination can be a powerful way to acknowledge the impact they have on others.
"I encourage people to take a moment to consider nominating community members whose volunteer efforts often go unseen. These awards are a great way to recognise and celebrate their valuable contributions."
