Australia's greenhouse gas emissions: March 2021 quarterly update

Australia's emissions are at their lowest level on record according to the latest Quarterly Update of Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

The update estimates Australia's national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions up to the March quarter of 2021.

Emissions in the year to March 2021 were 494.2 million tonnes - 5.3% or 27.8 million tonnes lower than the previous year. They were 20.8% lower than in 2005 (the baseline year for the Paris Agreement).

The results reflect:

  • continuing decreases in transport emissions due to COVID-19 restrictions
  • reduced fugitive emissions
  • ongoing reductions in emissions from electricity.

These reductions were partially offset by increased emissions from the land and agriculture sectors.
