Australia's greenhouse gas emissions: September 2021 quarterly update

Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources

Australia's emissions continue to fall according to the latest Quarterly Update of Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory.

The update estimates Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions to the end of September 2021.

Emissions in the year to September 2021 were 501.5 million tonnes - 0.8% or 4 million tonnes lower than the previous year. They were 20% lower than in 2005 (the baseline year for the Paris Agreement).

The results reflect:

  • long-term reductions in emissions from electricity
  • reduced fugitive emissions.

These reductions were partially offset by increased emissions from the transport, energy and agrictulture sectors.
