The Australian Workers' Union (AWU) confirms it has been advised of a fatal workplace incident at the Sunstate Cement site at the Port of Brisbane this morning.
The AWU has been informed that a worker has tragically lost his life.
Union organisers have spoken directly with AWU members on site and are offering them support.
This is a devastating loss, and the AWU extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and workmates of the man who has been killed.
The AWU is engaging with Sunstate Cement to ensure workers have access to appropriate support services.
Workplace deaths are unacceptable. Every worker has the right to return home safely at the end of their shift, and tragedies like this should not be occurring in modern Australian workplaces.
The AWU will continue to represent its members through this difficult time and will cooperate fully with any investigations to ensure the circumstances of this incident are thoroughly examined.
Quotes attributable to Stacey Schinnerl, Queensland Secretary of the Australian Workers' Union:
"First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the worker who has tragically lost his life."
"Every worker should be able to go to work and come home safe. In this day and age, tragedies like this simply should not be happening."
"This loss is unacceptable. The AWU will be working closely with Sunstate Cement to make sure workers have access to the support they need and that the site is safe."
"Our priority is the wellbeing of our members and ensuring that lessons are learned so no other family has to experience this kind of loss."
