It's been a proud and busy time in Kempsey Shire, with exciting news and important decisions shaping our community's future.
I'm thrilled to share that the 312 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets has been granted Freedom of the Shire, a ceremonial honour recognising the unit's close ties to our region. Historically, this privilege allowed trusted military units to enter a settlement freely. Today, it's a symbolic gesture of appreciation and respect.
To celebrate this honour and the squadron's 25th anniversary, a special ceremony and parade will be held on Saturday 25 October. The unit will assemble at the Kempsey Netball Courts at 10am, followed by a parade from the Police Station to the Civic Centre at 11am. I encourage everyone to come along and show your support for these outstanding young cadets.
We wrapped up the October Council meeting with several key outcomes. We adopted a concept design for the Crescent Head foreshore and Willow Street, which includes a net increase in parking and improved green space closer to the water, balancing functionality and amenity for locals and visitors.
We awarded nearly $60,000 in Community Grants across environmental, sporting, arts and cultural projects. These groups bring life and connection to our shire, and I can't wait to see their ideas come to life.
Council has also endorsed the Stuarts Point Structure Plan, which will be placed on public exhibition in the coming weeks. This plan aims to guide sustainable development while preserving the village's unique character.
