Parts of the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre (BARC) will be temporarily closed over the coming weeks as the centre begins Stage 1 of a major roof upgrade.
The works will focus on the plant room, gym, part of the reception area, and wet change rooms which have all been identified as urgent priorities due to heavy usage and the need for repairs. Stage 2, which will address the stadium roof, is in the planning stage.
Chief Executive Officer Fiona Weigall acknowledged the disruption to the community but emphasises the importance of the project.
"We understand this will be inconvenient for members and the community; however, these repairs are essential to ensure the BARC remains a safe, modern and reliable facility," Ms Weigall said.
"We appreciate everyone's patience while these works are carried out."
Closure schedule:
- Complete facility: 27 - 28 January
- Pool hall: 29 January - 8 February
- Wet change rooms: 9 February - 2 March (alternative change rooms available)
- Gym: 2 March -30 March
The upgrades have also affected BARC's Term 1 Learn to Swim program, which will now start on Monday 9 February. Families have been advised that no charges will apply for the period affected by the closures.
Memberships and visit passes have been adjusted to cover the closures, and members who wish to suspend their membership can do so in person or online. Group fitness classes will continue to run during this time with an amended timetable, and members will retain access to the Lakes Entrance Aquadome.
While every effort will be made to reopen facilities on schedule, unexpected delays may occur. Updates will be shared via the centre's website, email, and social media.
