Banned Driver Charged After Pursuit At Tamworth

A man banned from driving till 2027 has been charged following a pursuit through Tamworth this morning.

Officers attached to Tamworth Highway Patrol were patrolling Bridge Street, Tamworth, about 1.20am (Saturday 4 April 2026), when they directed a sedan to stop.

Police will allege the driver ignored the direction and a pursuit was initiated, travelling through Taminda at speeds of up to 170km/h in designated 100km/h zones. Road spikes were deployed on the Oxley Highway, with the vehicle eventually stopped near Soldier Settlement Road at Bective.

A 33-year-old man was arrested a short time later along with his 19-year-old male passenger.

The older man was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with four offences,

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • Exceed speed more than 45km/h
  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.

The younger man has been charged with an outstanding arrest warrant.

Both have been refused bail to appear in Bail Division Court 4 today (Sunday 5 April 2026).
