Strong progress continues on upgrades to the Bass Highway between Wynyard and Marrawah, with construction now underway on upgrades near Rocky Cape, 25 kilometres west of Wynyard.
The $100 million Bass Highway Wynyard to Marrawah Corridor Strategy is jointly funded by the Australian and Tasmanian governments, with the Australian Government contributing $60 million and the Tasmanian Government providing $40 million.
The Corridor Strategy is part of the broader $280 million Bass Highway 10 Year Action Plan to improve the highway from Launceston to Marrawah.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Barnaby Joyce, said the Bass Highway is a key link for freight, tourism and people movement across Tasmania.
"The Australian Government is investing a record $110 billion in infrastructure projects such as this, to help to connect communities and improve safety, while creating jobs and supporting our economic recovery," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
Federal Member for Braddon Gavin Pearce welcomed the State Government's progress on this section of the Bass Highway upgrade project.
"It's great to see continued progress on the highway west of Wynyard," Mr Pearce said.
"The new overtaking lane and junction improvements on the Rocky Cape section will improve safety and travel times for all road users and I look forward to work progressing over the next few months."
Tasmanian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, said construction is also underway on new turning lanes on Gates Road at Boat Harbour, along with improvements at Sisters Creek, including a junction upgrade at Myalla Road.
"Both projects are due to be completed in early 2022, weather conditions permitting," Minister Ferguson said.
Junction improvements at Mella Road at Mella, an overtaking lane and junction improvements at Monateric Road at Wiltshire, and an alignment improvement and shoulder widening at the Dunn Street junction at Crayfish Creek, are all in the final design phase.
Construction is also due to start this summer on two further projects to improve safety at Togari, and a realignment and junction upgrade at Morris Road near Boat Harbour.
Tenders were called on 30 October 2021 for road realignment and intersection improvements between Baulds Road and Tollymore Road at Table Cape.
