We're proposing permanent heritage protection for 7 residential and 8 Council-owned significant mid-century modern properties through a planning scheme amendment.
These properties showcase innovative and striking architectural design from the post World War II era, a time when Bayside saw a concentration of creative architects shaping the local landscape. Applying the Heritage Overlay would help ensure these important examples of mid-century architecture are preserved for future generations.
All residential properties were voluntarily nominated by their owners, highlighting strong community interest in protecting Bayside's architectural heritage.
Council has a legislated responsibility to safeguard local heritage places and has received authorisation from the Minister for Planning to publicly exhibit Amendment C196bays to the Bayside Planning Scheme. The public exhibition period will run from 24 July to 28 August 2025.
Interested community members are encouraged to review the amendment and make a submission. If any submissions request a change to the exhibited amendment, Council may refer the Amendment to an Independent Planning Panel. The panel will consider all submissions and provide recommendations to Council before a final decision is made.
Currently, more than 1,500 properties in Bayside are in the Heritage Overlay. This Amendment continues Council's work with the community to protect and celebrate Bayside's diverse architectural heritage.
