Bland Shire Marks National Day of Mourning

Bland Shire Council joins communities across Australia in acknowledging the National Day of Mourning on Thursday 22 January, declared by the Prime Minister following the tragic terrorist attack in Bondi on 14 December 2025.

On this day, Council will fly flags at half-mast as a mark of respect and remembrance for those who lost their lives, for their families and for all who have been deeply affected by this senseless act of violence.

Mayor of Bland Shire, Cr Brian Monaghan, said the tragedy has been felt far beyond Bondi.

"While this heartbreaking event occurred in Sydney, the sorrow is shared right across the country, including here in the Bland Shire," Mayor Monaghan said.

"We pause to honour those who were lost and to stand with their loved ones in grief. In moments like this, Australians show who we truly are, people who look out for one another, who step forward to help and who refuse to let hate define us."

Mayor Monaghan said regional communities play an important role in standing together during difficult times.

"Our Shire knows the value of community. We check in on our neighbours, we support one another and we stand united when it matters most. That spirit of care and compassion is stronger than violence and fear."

Council encourages residents to take a moment on 22 January to reflect, remember and reach out to others who may be struggling.

"If you or someone you know is feeling impacted, please don't carry it alone," Mayor Monaghan said. "A simple conversation, a kind word, or asking 'are you okay?' can make a real difference."

Support is available 24/7 through services including:

  • NSW Mental Health Line – 1800 011 511
  • Lifeline – 13 11 14

Bland Shire Council stands in solidarity with the Bondi community and with all Australians, united in remembrance, compassion and hope.
