Boating fatality at Marion Bay Narrows at Dunalley, TAS

Sadly, a man has died following a boating incident at Marion Bay Narrows at Dunalley in Southern Tasmania, Tasmania Police say.

Tasmania Police were advised that a vessel had overturned in the Marion Bay Narrows, near Dunalley, about 7.10am on Sunday 3 June.

Dunalley Police, Marine and Rescue Services and the Tasmania Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to the incident.

Two men from the overturned vessel were assisted by people surfing in the area and another vessel that was also in the immediate area.  Both men were taken by vessel to the Boomer Bay Boat Ramp where they were attended to by the Tasmania Ambulance Service, prior to being taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital by Ambulance.  Both men were treated for shock and hypothermia.

A short time later the Tasmania Westpac Rescue Helicopter located the body of a man floating on the surface of the water.  The body was recovered by Marine and Rescue Services personnel, with the assistance of an off duty fire fighter who was also in the area.

The completely submerged 5.6 metre white fibreglass vessel that was involved in the incident was raised by police divers and has been recovered.

All three men on board the vessel were wearing inflatable PFDs.

Whilst weather at the time of the incident was fine, but cold, there was a large swell with frequent breaking waves.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
