Body modifier arrested over genital mutilation, NSW

New South Wales detectives have arrested a body modifier over the alleged genital mutilation of a woman in Newcastle, NSW Police say.

Officers allege the 33-year-old woman engaged the body modifier for a procedure at a business in Newcastle West in 2016 but later made a formal complaint of mutilation to police.

Detectives from the Brisbane Water and Tuggerah Lakes Police Districts formed a joint strike force, codenamed Nellievale following the incident.

Around 8am today, (Tuesday 1 May), Strike Force Nellievale officers arrested the tattooist/body modifier at his home at Terrigal on the Central Coast.

The 37-year-old man, who is not a qualified medical practitioner, has been taken to the Gosford Police Station where he is assisting detectives with their inquiries.

Body modification is currently not legislated in New South Wales however members of the so-called Skin Penetration industry are required to follow public health regulations.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
