As part of the Finocchiaro CLP Government's year of Growth, Certainty and Security, Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill leaves today to lead a targeted business delegation to Japan and Korea, consolidating the Territory's position as a strategic partner into the Asian region.
Part of the Government's long-term pro-active investor engagement program, coming on the back of recent events in the Middle East the delegation will provide a critical opportunity to advance investment opportunities in the Territory across energy, enabling infrastructure, digital and critical minerals sectors.
"Planning for this delegation has been underway since the inaugural NT Investment Summit held in July 2025 and comes at a pivotal moment in the region's history, with both Australia and our Asian neighbours looking to diversify and firm up trade partnerships across the South-East Asian region" Ms Cahill said.
"In a time of geo-political uncertainty, it is essential we demonstrate our natural strengths and commitment as a strong and reliable partner, which will be reaffirmed thorughthis delegation to meet with businesses in Japan and South Korea."
The Territory has all the elements required to be a hub for processing and refinement of a range of energy sources including gas and biofuels.
At a time where the world's fuel security is under significant pressure, showcasing the Northern Territory as a resource-rich jurisdiction, ready to work with our near neighbours and implement long-term solutions to reduce reliance on at risk supply chains is critical. Ms Cahill said "this is the time to be strengthening and reinforcing our connections in the region, the time to advance, not retreat".
Japan and Korea are important trading partners to the Northern Territory, with Japan being the Territory's largest export market. The roadshow includes a program of targeted business forums, exclusive investor round tables and government-to-government engagements. Key business meetings providing an opportunity to reaffirm the Territory's commitment to deepen strategic partnerships across the region with 50 plus Japanese and 20 plus Korean business and industry representatives, including JOGMEC, INPEX, JBIC, KOMIR and Samsung, will be undertaken.
The delegation will include representatives from the Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations, Mr Brad Welsh, CEO and Managing Director of Energy Resources of Australia and Chair of the Mineral Council of Australia's Indigenous Partnerships Committee, Ms Natalie Bell, President of the Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Mr Sean Rodrigues, Country Manager - Japan, Santos Ltd (based in Japan).
