Boost for Businesses, Councils Before Spirit Arrivals

Tasmanian Government

Jane Howlett, Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events

Tasmanian businesses and councils will share in more than $4 million to help prepare for the arrival of the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Jane Howlett, said the boost was part of the Spirit Preparedness Fund to help Tasmanian businesses and councils respond to the increased visitor demand.
"The investment is designed to prepare for the increase in visitation and to improve the visitor experience for the caravan and motorhome visitor market," Minister Howlett said.
"I am pleased to say that four councils, in the north and north-west of the state, were successful in their application and the program will support 17 businesses to develop their tourism offering to provide more experiences.
"In supporting tourism operators, we are enhancing the visitor experience and encouraging those that travel to Tasmania, to stay longer and explore more of our state."
Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO, Amy Hills, said a large amount of work has been done by the industry to better understand the types of visitors travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania vessels.
"We have also been looking at how we can create the types of experiences that will cater to their needs and encourage them to travel around our state more," Ms Hills said.
"It is vitally important we are as prepared as possible to benefit from the increased visitation from the new Spirit vessels, have strategies in place to encourage those visitors to invest in all of our regional communities and that councils are as prepared as possible through their caravan and RV infrastructure."
As part of the program, applicants are required to provide a cash contribution of at least equal to the grant amount requested.
The Spirit Preparedness Fund formed part of the $27.8 million Tourism and Hospitality Support Package.
