Boroondara Joins Sunflower Hidden Disabilities Program

Supporting people with hidden disabilities

The City of Boroondara is proud to be part of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a global initiative that helps people with non-visible disabilities participate in the community.

Staff at our Libraries, Maternal and Child Health centres, Boroondara Youth Hub, Hawthorn Arts Centre, Kew Court House and Customer Connect are now trained to recognise the sunflower symbol and to provide friendly, understanding assistance to people with hidden disabilities.

What is the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program?

Not all disabilities are visible. Some people live with conditions that aren't immediately obvious but can impact how they move through the world.

The Sunflower Program allows people with hidden disabilities to wear a Sunflower lanyard, pin or card as a discreet way to show they may need a little extra time, patience or understanding. Staff trained to recognise the symbol are equipped to offer extra support and respond with understanding, kindness and respect.

How it works

  • front-facing staff across Boroondara wear the sunflower symbol to show they've completed training and are ready to provide support.
  • Anyone with a hidden disability, their carer or loved one can wear a green Sunflower product to indicate that they may need extra help or understanding.
