Brighton intersections to be more pedestrian safe

A prominent strip of cafes and retail spots in Bayside is set to become more pedestrian-friendly.

Council is improving pedestrian safety by building new raised zebra crossings at two busy intersections in the Church Street and Bay Street shopping precincts.

Works to upgrade the roundabout at Bay and Asling Street is currently underway, with the second upgrade planned for the roundabout at Church and Carpenter Street in mid-May.

The installation of the raised zebra crossings is part of Council's investment in improving pedestrian priority on key walking routes.

The upgrades follow community consultation on the Bayside Walking Strategy in 2015, where at the time, the community raised concerns about the conflicts at roundabouts, stating it was vague whether pedestrians or vehicles had priority at a roundabout.

Raised zebra crossings improve safety by slowing vehicles on approach to the intersection as well as making it easier for drivers to see pedestrians. The new raised road surface will also help to improve access for pedestrians, including those with mobility impairments.

The Council Plan 2017-2021 prioritises walking and cycling as the preferred modes of transport for short trips in Bayside.
