Broken infrastructure promises costing jobs

Tasmanian Labor
  • Construction work in Tasmania falls 7.7% in the past year
  • $51 million less construction work in the past three months
  • Broken infrastructure promises hurting Tasmania's economy and costing jobs
  • New data from the ABS released today shows total construction work done in Tasmania fell 6.2% in the quarter to March 2021 and by 7.7% for the year.

Acting Labor Leader Anita Dow said the new data revealed there was $51 million less construction work done in the past three months, the worst result of any State.

"Today's data demonstrates the consequences of the Liberal's failure to deliver on their infrastructure promises," Ms Dow said.

"Peter Gutwein claims that his Government will lead Tasmania out of the pandemic with an infrastructure led recovery yet these numbers paint a very different picture."

Ms Dow said not only had the Liberals underdelivered $600 million worth of infrastructure, they couldn't find a way to spend the $25 million allocated to fix traffic congestion in Hobart's CBD and have watched on as Tasmania's unemployment rate has become the worst in the nation.

"The data released across the past week paints the grim picture facing Tasmanians if Peter Gutwein cannot get the state's infrastructure program back on track.

"Peter Gutwein must outline his government's plan to fix Tasmania's infrastructure delays. These failings are hurting the economy, costing jobs, and restricting Tasmania's future growth."
