Broken promise to increase pay for hotel quarantine workers

  • Supplementary payment promised in December
  • Delay puts community at risk
  • Premier must explain the hold up
  • Premier Peter Gutwein must explain why his government has not acted with urgency to fulfil a promise to supplement the pay of hotel quarantine staff.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said the commitment was made in December to mitigate the risk of hotel quarantine security staff working second jobs.

"Hotel quarantine is a frontline health issue and it has been identified as the source of all recent outbreaks of COVID-19. Tasmania is still in a declared health emergency and yet where is the urgency from the Government to ensure the system is as tight at it possibly can be, including supporting quarantine staff so they don't have to work multiple jobs?

"Yet, once again, we see the Premier saying the right things, but not following through.

"This should have been a top priority for Peter Gutwein and he must explain why there has been such a long delay in getting payments to workers.

"Does that mean that security staff have continued to work multiple jobs, because the Premier hasn't held up his end of the bargain?

"This issue is far too important to get wrong. We have seen in other states the dire consequences of hotel quarantine outbreaks and the complacency shown by this government is alarming."
