Brunei Hosts First Workplace Safety Dialogue

For the first time, Brunei Darussalam has brought representatives of government, employers and workers together for a dedicated dialogue on occupational safety and health (OSH). This milestone marks a major step in strengthening social dialogue and enhancing national OSH governance in the country.

Held on 20 November 2025, the dialogue was convened by the Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA), following an ILO proposal to establish a national tripartite platform on OSH. It brought together the Industry Safety and Environment Group (IHSEG) representing employers and the Occupational Safety and Health Workers Association (OSHWA) representing workers, with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in support.

Participants discussed the next steps to formally establish a national tripartite advisory body on OSH. They also explored opportunities for joint initiatives and enhanced collaboration to support the implementation of Brunei Darussalam's OSH commitments.

"This first tripartite OSH dialogue represents an important milestone for Brunei Darussalam," said Dr Yuka Ujita, Senior Occupational Safety and Health Specialist, ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. "A strong national framework for OSH can only be achieved through active and close cooperation between government, employers and workers, working towards a common goal. The ILO is proud to support Brunei Darussalam in building a sustainable and inclusive approach to protecting workers and promoting a safe and healthy working environment for all."

The dialogue builds on Brunei Darussalam's recent ratification of the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187) during the 112th Session of the International Labour Conference in June 2024, reflecting the country's commitment to advancing a preventative safety and health culture.

The ILO has been supporting efforts to establish tripartite OSH structures in Brunei Darussalam since 2022, including through institutional development, technical advice and capacity strengthening.
