Youth in the Barkly Region will benefit from a $7.6 million investment under Round 3 of the Federal Coalition Government’s highly successful Building Better Regions Fund.
Country Liberals Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion announced the CLP’s investment in Barkly local projects under Round 3 which will help grow the economy and build a strong future for Australia’s regions.
"The Barkly Regional Council will use this CLP investment of $7,621,497 on youth focused infrastructure in key communities across the Barkly," Senator Scullion said.
"This project is backed by community as part of the Barkly Regional Deal and includes a new youth centre for Tennant Creek to replace the Youth Linx Youth Centre."
"A cycle/walking path from Weaber Road to Blain Street will be built and the youth in Ali Curung will get a new Sport and Recreation Centre."
Barkly Regional Council Mayor Steve Edgington who is also the Chair of Regional Development Australia NT, said it was an exciting and much needed announcement for the Barkly region.
"This funding responds to the needs of our youth by delivering functional, modern infrastructure to keep our youth engaged and active in these communities," Mayor Edgington said.
"This is a big investment in youth facilities and infrastructure that will go a long way to helping the Barkly youth reach their potential by engaging them in activities and providing magnificent facilities."
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Coalition Government is committed to ensuring Australia’s regions remain strong, resilient and prosperous in the long term.
"We are supporting our regions through investing in important local infrastructure, as well as great community-building and planning initiatives under the Building Better Regions Fund and other Government priorities such as the Regional Growth Fund and our decentralisation agenda," MrMcCormack said.
"In this round we are also investing more than $70 million in regional tourism infrastructure, to support those many regional communities that rely on tourism to bolster their economy.
"We have seen fantastic outcomes from the first two rounds, and today’s announcement continues our commitment to unlocking the economic potential of regional Australia and ensuring our regions continue to thrive."
