Burglary and attempted theft from an ATM at Cheltenham

Police are appealing for public assistance to identify a man who attempted to steal money from an ATM in Cheltenham earlier in the month, Victoria Police say.

The incident happened on Bernard Street on 5 February when the man pulled up and parked his vehicle, a burgundy 2004 Grand Vitara XL7 wagon with no plates, in front of a Bernard Street supermarket around 3.30 in the morning.

The man gained entry into the supermarket by jemmying open the front door and then used an angle grinder to break into the ATM, which was situated just inside the front door.

The man fled empty handed after being disturbed by the arrival of police.

He is described as being aged in his 40s and wearing shorts, a yellow fluoro top and a camouflage pattern floppy hat.

Investigators have release CCTV footage of a man they believe can assist with their enquiries.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
