Bus Safety Week, which is part of the ‘Be Bus Aware,’ campaign aims to help all road users can keep safe on and around buses.
NSW has one of the largest metropolitans bus fleet in Australia. Around 4000 buses operate in the Sydney area, while another 1000 buses service the Newcastle, Wollongong and Blue Mountains areas. In addition, more than 3000 bus services operate in rural and regional NSW.
From 2014 to 2018 (provisional), 34 people lost their lives in bus crashes across NSW and 454 were seriously injured. Of these 34 fatalities, 14 were pedestrians, 11 were drivers (all in vehicles other than a bus), six were passengers (four in buses, two in other vehicles), two were pedal cyclists and one was a motorcyclist.Crashes involving buses often result in more severe outcomes to other road users due to their size and mass, and because they take longer to slow down than other smaller vehicles on the road.
The campaign will comprise:
- A media announcement
- Social media posts on the NSW Road Safety Facebook page and shares on partner pages
- Live radio reads
- The ‘wrapping’ of a State Transit bus in ‘Be Bus Aware’ visuals
- Digital content including new animations highlighting key messages
- Promotion on bus CCTV and ‘snapframes’ (posters) and variable message signage on roads
- Stakeholder communications utilising a toolkit of branded materials.
