Sunshine Coast Council has today (Thursday March 19) endorsed a plan of works for $1.275 million received from the Australian Government in bushfire assistance funds.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mark Jamieson said council had received the funding as one of Australia's 42 most severely bushfire impacted councils.
The funds will be used to rebuild impacted infrastructure and strengthen community resilience and council will submit the plan to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) by March 27, 2020.
"These plans had been developed through extensive consultation with local emergency services, government and community partners and First Nations representatives," Mayor Jamieson said.
"Disaster recovery and resilience building requires a multi-agency approach and external input is critical to the planning, development and future implementation of the plans.
"Each agency in our region has shared their learnings and these learnings formed the basis of our plans."
Program of Works
- Economic Development (business resilience expo/large networking event mid-year with the chambers of commerce/business community and sponsorship of a major event on the Sunshine Coast)
- Environmental Operations (strategic fire risk review, whole of region strategic fire trail upgrade, Fire Management Support Officer, Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve and Doonan Wetlands Natural Reserve recovery works, First Nations people relationship program and Government Wireless Network radio upgrade).
- Disaster Management (Disaster Resilience Project Support Officer, upgrade and rebuild of the Local Disaster Coordination Centre, disaster resilience community media campaign, disaster management and evacuation centre material storage and logistics centre and a region-wide disaster management conference).
- Sports and Venues – Community and Economic Development (Evacuation Centres) (upgrade to evacuation centre management and facilities).
- South East Queensland Fire and Biodiversity Consortium Healthy Land and Water (Fire management planning workshops and post fire and climate change community event).
- Queensland Fire and Emergency Services – Rural Fire (Implementing of portable water tanks for use in the Sunshine Coast Region).
QRA will review the program and council will have until June 30, 2022 to complete the program.
