Bushwalkers safe but spending another night in Morton National Park

Two bushwalkers, who have spent the past five nights in the Morton National Park near Nowra, will spend another night outdoors due to inclement weather, NSW Police say.

It’s believed a 59-year-old man and 60-year-old woman went bushwalking in the Ettrema Gorge west of Nowra, on Saturday (8 December 2018).

Mr McCarthy was expected to return to his home in Canberra by Tuesday but did not return and about 1.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 12 December 2018), police were notified.

A search was launched utilising resources from South Coast Police District, PolAir, the Westpac and NSW Ambulance helicopters, and the SES, and shortly before 2pm today (Thursday 13 December 2018), the walkers made contact with searchers by mobile phone.

Their location has been confirmed but as it is an estimated two-hour walk into the gorge, and due to deteriorating weather conditions, a decision was made to suspend the retrieval operation until first light tomorrow (Friday 14 December 2018).

Searchers have confirmed the walkers are uninjured and have shelter. Their families have been notified.

A decision will be made in the morning whether they will be walked out or extracted by air.
