Business Employment Data: September 2025 Quarter

Business employment data includes filled jobs and gross earnings, with breakdowns by industry, sex, age, region, and territorial authority area, using a combination of data from two different Inland Revenue sources: the employer monthly schedule (EMS) and payday filing. Both are associated with PAYE (pay as you earn) tax data.

Gross earnings data for Business employment data: September 2025 quarter has not been released due to issues identified during data preparation. We will publish the gross earnings data as soon as it is ready and will send a subscriber update once it is released.

Data for filled jobs is available as expected, although it may be subject to very minor updates in future.

In the September 2025 quarter:

  • total actual filled jobs were 2.23 million
  • total seasonally adjusted filled jobs were flat (up 938 jobs) compared with the June 2025 quarter.

Filled jobs changes by industry

At an industry level, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs in the September 2025 quarter compared with the June 2025 quarter were in:

  • manufacturing - down 0.7 percent (1,517 jobs)
  • education and training - up 0.7 percent (1,500 jobs)
  • construction - down 0.7 percent (1,265 jobs)
  • public administration and safety - up 0.3 percent (549 jobs)
  • accommodation and food services - down 0.3 percent (477 jobs).

Filled jobs changes by region

At a regional level, the largest changes in seasonally adjusted filled jobs in the September 2025 quarter compared with the June 2025 quarter were in:

  • Canterbury - up 0.5 percent (1,489 jobs)
  • Wellington - down 0.3 percent (825 jobs)
  • Auckland - down 0.1 percent (795 jobs)
  • Hawke's Bay - down 0.4 percent (299 jobs)
  • Otago - up 0.3 percent (293 jobs).

Filled jobs changes for men and women

In actual terms, from the September 2024 quarter to the September 2025 quarter, the number of filled jobs fell by 1.5 percent (16,627 jobs) for men and fell by 0.5 percent (5,700 jobs) for women.
