Canberra's Green Army urged to be 'green' in deeds and dress this weekend

Exchange for Change

Act green and support the Green Machine!

Canberrans cheering on the Green Machine in the 'big dance' against the Sydney Roosters this Sunday are encouraged not just to dress green, but also ACT GREEN and help score a golden point for the environment.

This NRL Grand Final Day, thousands of drinks in cans and bottles will be consumed across the ACT as eager Raiders fans tune in to see what may be their team's first premiership victory in a quarter of a century.

The ACT Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is asking the Green Army not to offload their drinks rubbish into the (sin) bin this Sunday. Rather make it a blinder for the environment, the community and yourselves by returning eligible drink containers at your local ACT CDS return point and earn a 10c refund for each can or bottle recycled.

Aluminium cans take 500 years to break down, and glass can take up to 1 million years. But both are easy to recycle. Once dropped off for recycling, they are processed ready for their second life. Recycled plastic bottles can be used to make new bottles, recycled glass in the construction of new roads while recycled aluminium cans can be used to make aeroplane wings!

Most glass and plastic drink bottles and cans are eligible for recycling and it's easy to get involved. Just collect your eligible used drink containers and drop them off at one of the 21 convenient return points across the ACT.

And if you really want to score a try for your community and the environment this weekend, consider donating your refund to a good cause with Vinnies and the Salvos the main charity partners of the scheme.

So, don't be on the pine this Sunday! Get white line fever, act green and be a playmaker for the environment.

About ACT Container Deposit Scheme:
