To mark the start of Mental Health Month ACT 2019 the Canberra community are encouraged start conversations about mental health and wellbeing, in support of this year's theme, Conversations and Connections.

Mental Health Community Coalition ACT, in partnership with the ACT Government, are coordinating several activities throughout Canberra during October for Mental Health Month. Mental Health Month aims to raise community awareness and understanding about mental illness and promote positive mental health and wellbeing.

"One in five Australians experience mental illness each year. This could be you or someone around you, like a loved one, family member, friend, colleague, or a neighbour," Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury said today.

"As a community, it's time we engaged with mental health differently. Rather than focusing on just the 'problem' of mental illness, we should also consider the resilience and strength that supporting each other can bring. Part of this means tackling the stigma around mental illness, as more people come forward to express their mental health needs."
