When South Australia first responded to the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 with a general lockdown, our library programs team saw an opportunity to offer distraction and delight with the Cards of Kindness project.
Children from across the Adelaide Hills were invited to create a unique postcard that reflected their experience of being at home during the most locked-down time of the year, both with special artwork on the cover, and a short message on the back.
When complete, these postcards were sent on to older members of the community in residential care or as part of community groups, and these recipients returned the favour with a postcard of their own.
The project involved over 140 children and all postcards were scanned and retained digitally to be a part of the State Library of South Australia archives as a snapshot of experiences during this unprecedented period of our history.
