Cash dash in Portland

Portland Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for information after a man was caught trying to steal cash from a licensed premises in Portland this month, Victoria Police say.

Investigators have been told the man entered the Cape Nelson Road venue about 9.50pm on Tuesday 28 August and walked through to a staff office.

While inside, he took cash and a money tray from a safe and concealed it in his pants.

The man was spotted by a staff member, who confronted him before realising he was armed with a knife.

The offender ran out of the office while being chased by a female staff member.

He fell over and dropped most of the money on Cape Nelson Road before fleeing on foot along Calvert Street.

Detectives have released images and CCTV footage of a man who they believe can assist with their enquiries.

He is perceived as Caucasian in appearance with a medium build and about 175cm tall.

He was wearing a blue balaclava, blue and white striped top, blue cargo jeans, dark shoes and white gloves.

It is believed the man may also have a tattoo on the back of his neck.
