Cause of Haymarket fire still to be determined

Police are still to determine the cause of a fire which damaged a garage in Haymarket overnight.

Emergency services were called to the rear carpark of a multi-storey building on George Street shortly before 11.30pm (Thursday 17 October 2019), after fire broke out in a detached double-garage.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 1am (Friday 18 October 2019), but the building was damaged and the contents – believed to be old furniture and mattresses – destroyed.

Fire and Rescue NSW officers been unable to enter or search the garage as it is structurally unsound. As the cause of the fire is unknown, it is being treated as suspicious.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command have established a crime scene with detectives to liaise with Crime Scene investigators later this morning.
