Townsville City Council is upgrading another important CBD pedestrian link, with work starting on a new footpath on Sturt Street today.
The project includes new footpaths on both sides of Sturt Street between Blackwood Street and Stanley Street and will be completed by BMD Constructions – supporting up to 20 local jobs.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the project is another important investment by Council in the CBD.
"This is one of the last remaining sections of old footpath in the heart of the CBD and it needs to be upgraded," Cr Hill said.
"The upgrade of Sturt Street comes on the back of the new footpath along Flinders Street West, which has been welcomed by local traders.
"Council continues to deliver infrastructure upgrades right across our community, whether they are in the city or the suburbs, as part of the nearly $400 million spend on infrastructure in the 2018-19 Budget."
Infrastructure Committee Chair Cr Mark Molachino said Council is continuing to invest in improving infrastructure and facilities in the CBD.
"This upgrade will improve access, safety and make the street look much better," Cr Molachino said.
"Council has invested significantly in upgrading its infrastructure in the city centre, from the recently completed CBD Utilities Upgrade to new footpaths such as Flinders Street West and Sturt Street."
Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said local traders would welcome the upgraded footpath.
"Plenty of people come into this area of the CBD whether it is for a coffee, to see a movie or use one of the professional services firms on the street," Cr Greaney said.
"That's why it's important Council is upgrading its infrastructure and improving the streetscape through building new footpaths and planting new trees to encourage future growth in the area."
The project is expected to be complete in late June.
