Charge after cannabis found in car at Balranald

A South Australian man has been charged with supplying a prohibited drug after police allegedly found almost 2.5kg of cannabis in a vehicle yesterday.

About 11.50pm (Saturday 2 November 2019), officers attached to Barrier Police District stopped a Holden Astra in Market Street, Balranald – near the NSW/ Victoria border and over 130km west of Hay.

The driver participated in a roadside drug test before police searched the vehicle on reasonable suspicion that it may contain prohibited drugs.

Upon searching the Holden, officers allegedly located 2.46 kilograms of cannabis and a vacuum sealer.

Police will allege in court that the cannabis was being driven from South Australia to be sold in Queensland.

Both the driver and passenger were arrested and taken to Balranald Police Station.

The passenger, a 35-year-old man from Elizabeth Park, South Australia, was charged with supply prohibited drug. He was granted bail to appear at Hay Local Court on Monday 2 December 2019.

The driver was released without charge.
