Charges after stolen vehicle involved in Bruce Highway crash

Police have charged two people after an allegedly stolen vehicle was involved in a serious traffic crash near Coolbie on December 22, Queensland Police say.

It will be alleged that around 5.30am, a stolen Holden Cruze and a stolen Mitsubishi Challenger were travelling southbound on the Bruce Highway.

The Cruze allegedly passed another vehicle (a Toyota Kluger) at high speed, and as the Challenger went to follow suit, it narrowly avoided a head-on crash with an oncoming truck.

The Challenger then collided with the rear left-hand side of the Kluger, forcing it into the northbound lane and into a drain before it rolled a number of times.

The Challenger also rolled multiple times on the southern side of the highway.

The Cruze returned to the scene to pick up the two uninjured occupants of the Challenger before allegedly speeding off again towards Townsville.

The driver of the Kluger – a 72-year-old Upper Stone man – along with the two passengers – a 70-year-old Ingham man and a 69-year-old Upper Stone woman – were trapped for some time before being taken to Townsville Hospital with serious injuries including cuts, abrasions and fractures.

On Boxing Day, Townsville police located and arrested a 16-year-old Annandale girl in relation to this and other matters.

She has been charged with three counts of obstruct police, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of aiding a person to escape from lawful custody, burglary, serious assault police, stealing and trespass.

On December 27, police also located and arrested a 16-year-old Garbutt boy in relation to the matter.

He has been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of burglary, stealing, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm and driving without a licence.
