Charges laid after service station assault in Islington

Three men have been charged and after allegedly assaulting two people in Newcastle, NSW Police say.

Just after 10am today (Saturday 2 December 2017), three men allegedly armed with weapons entered a service station on Maitland Road, Islington.

Police will allege in court the three men then assaulted two people inside the premises, before fleeing the scene in a car.

An employee in the store was not injured during the incident, and the two people who were assaulted also fled the scene.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.

Following inquiries, police were patrolling the area and located the vehicle. The three men were arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

A 22-year-old man was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, affray and possess/use prohibited weapon without permission.

A 27-year-old man was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, affray and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

A second 22-year-old man was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, affray and breach of bail.

All three were refused bail and are due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday 3 December 2017.

Police are also urging the two people who were assaulted to come forward.
