Charges laid over pursuits near Tweed Heads, NSW

A man and woman will face court today after two pursuits in the state’s north, NSW Police say.


Just after midnight yesterday (Sunday 1 July 2018), officers from Tweed/Byron Police District were patrolling the Banora Point area when they allegedly attempted to stop a Mercedes Benz 230E on Darlington Drive for a random breath test.

The vehicle allegedly failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated; it was later terminated for safety reasons.

The Mercedes was later seen on Sexton Hill Drive and another pursuit was initiated.

A short time later, the pursuit was again terminated due to safety concerns.

Following inquiries, officers attended a resort on Tweed Coast Road at Cabarita where police allegedly seized a firearm, vehicle keys, cannabis, and ammunition.

A 26-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were arrested and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.

The man was charged with 11 offences, including:

  • resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty;
  • possess prohibited drug;
  • possess ammunition without holding licence/permit;
  • goods in personal custody suspected being stolen;
  • possess housebreaking implements;
  • police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously (x2);
  • drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous;
  • drive motor vehicle during disqualification period;
  • take and drive conveyance without consent of owner;
  • possess unauthorised prohibited firearm.

The woman was charged with two counts of possess prohibited weapon without permit.

Both were refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court today (Monday 2 July 2018).
