Northern Territory Police have charged a 19-year-old male following a pursuit in Palmerston over the weekend.
Around 10:30pm on 24 November a vehicle was detected travelling at speed outbound on Stuart Highway, Winnellie, Northern Territory Police say.
Police attempted to apprehend the vehicle near the intersection of Amy Johnson Avenue however it is alleged the vehicle failed to stop. Police subsequently commenced a pursuit.
It is alleged the vehicle travelled at excessive speeds, entered an intersection at a red light and narrowly avoided colliding with two civilian vehicles. The pursuit was terminated for safety reasons.
A short time later police sighted the vehicle of interest again and the pursuit was recommenced.
Police successfully deployed a Tyre Deflation Device at the intersection of Emery Avenue and Chung Wah Terrace. The vehicle came to a stop in Gunn Crescent where the driver attempted to flee from police on foot. He was apprehended by police and placed under arrest.
Senior Sergeant Angela Stringer said this sort of driving behaviour is arrogant and can lead to a serious crash or a road fatality.
"Police don’t want to be delivering death messages to families particularly at this time of the year.
"Traffic campaigns are starting up all over the Territory in the coming days – it’s up to Territorians to drive safely and be responsible road users," she said.
The male was charged with dangerous driving in pursuit and drive motor vehicle while unlicensed.
