Charges - Stolen vehicle - Groote Eylandt

Groote Eylandt Police have charged three male youths following the alleged theft of a vehicle.

Police alleged the youths, aged 14, 15 and 15 stole a vehicle from a property in Angurugu using keys that were stolen during a previous unlawful entry.

The vehicle was driven through the victim's front fence which caused extensive damage. The youths conducted a number of burnouts before rolling the vehicle on its side.

All three youths were denied youth diversion.

They were charged with:

  • Aggravated Use Of Motor Vehicle
  • Damage To Property
  • Trespass
  • Drive A Motor Vehicle While Unlicensed

They were summonsed to appear in Alyangula Local Court on 21 March 2019.

Senior Sergeant Tanya Woodcock said the potential consequences of this type of offending is so serious that these youths were determined to be unsuitable for diversion away from court.

"Restitution for the damage to property will be requested. If deemed payable by the Local Court Judge, this cost can be deducted from royalty funds of the youths' families," she said.
